大正末期を舞台に、旧制一高生と踊り子の淡い恋とその後の切ない別れを描いた川端康成の小説の映画化。山口百恵の相手役は、一般公募で1万通にのぼる応募の中から選ばれた三浦友和が射止めた。天城に向かう山道で旅芸人の一行に出会った一高生・川島は、一行の中に、古風な髪形の似合う美しい娘・かおるを見つける。川島と一行は下田まで同行することになった。
